Cartoon Mouse character!

By

Hi Richard.

Have just browsed through your site and really like your work. Very good indeed. Smashing. I have a project that has been ‘in the melting pot’ for some time due to not finding the right guy (gal) to illustrate a children’s book (yes, yet another one!) for me and my chum Roger (who lives on the Isle of Skye). I have my own small publishing set up, and will self-publish the first book of a series of six in all…..and have worked in book production, teaching, computer training. I can draw a bit (a handicap really) and have managed to originate characters for this book we have and have created lots of grungy black and white Photoshopped background images…… I’ve always seen the illustrations as being gritty, sooty, black and white, splodgy etc….but I am open to suggestions now as finding the right sort of illustrator has proved difficult…..so maybe a different tack might get the project rolling again. I’ll not ramble on too much for now…but maybe what I (we) need is a simpler approach…and cartoon style has been in the back of my mind. So, my question is what kind of rates do you work for? Are you too busy? Can we swap ideas back and forwards just so you get some idea of the work involved….I’ve found that some of the illustrators I’ve approached have been far too expensive, and quite inflexible……when really what Roger and myself are looking for is a chap who could work with us……be sympathetic (if you’ve got the ‘sym’ we’ve got the pathetic) Sorry to sound vague…but I’m sure you’ve heard this kind of pitch before. Apologies for the flippant email….its getting later in the day…but it’s a very nice project…..seriously. Best wishes………Steve T

Here’s what I came up with…

He's a mining mouse!

Unfortunately he wasn’t too impressed and I didn’t get the project. Don’t know if anyone else did!

You can’t win them all.

  1. Happy to give this post a link back from mine as you have the right approach and hit a nail on the head as far as I am concerned. Thankyou.

  2. [...] Here’s the back page blurb that I was given to generate ideas for this illustration… [...]
