Wacom graphics tablet!
ByI’ve had Wacom graphic tablets for a few years now – they’ve gathered loads of dust! I’ve never got around to using them properly. I’m a cartoonist of the old school – pen and ink on cartridge paper.(Then scanning into my Mac.)
So, I’ve finally decided it time to use my A4 sized one. (It cost me a pretty penny!) My thinking behind this is to eliminate me going from my computer to my drawing board, drawing and then going back to the computer and scanning in. Doesn’t sound much when my drawing board is two feet away from my computer.
One of my favorite excuses for not using the tablet is: ‘you have to look at the screen to draw and it’s just not natural’. I know there are now really expensive versions of the Wacom tablets (Cintiq 12WX) where you draw directly onto a screen – but my wife won’t let me buy one!
Anyway, here’s a cartoon I just made up as I went along.

I suppose this works fine for the quick drawing style. But normally I tend to rough out my cartoons in pencil and then trace over them neatening them up as I go along on a light box.
Watch this space – or Ebay if I decide to sell it.
Your comments appreciated!?

Hi Richard!
and I love your work.
I am truly enjoying your site
I understand what your going through getting used to working on a tablet.
It took me awhile but now it feels completely natural.
Looking somewhere else from where you are drawing IS weird …at first.
BTW there are much less expensive (but still great quality) tablets other than Wacom on the market.
In England you can get Trust brand tablets at a fraction of what the Wacoms cost.
I have two Trust tablets that my cousins brought me from Reading when they came to visit,
since i was unable to buy them here.
(I live in British Columbia, Canada)
One tablet is 6×8″ and one is 9X12″
i have to say, I’ve actually ended up preferring the smaller 6×8′ because it fits nicely on my desk beside my keyboard and you don’t have to move your whole arm around while drawing. I never did draw “big” anyway.
The Trust tablets are also marketed under the name Aiptek in some countries (usa for one) They’re the exact same.

Check them out i am sure you’ll be surprised at how much less they cost,
and replacement pens are only 10 us dollars! I’ve had customers in the states mail me replacement Aiptek pens–they’re identical to Trust
I have been very happy with the tablets. The 6×8 has already lasted 6 years used daily (I don’t even use a mouse at all anymore–just the tablet to perform all mouse functions)
My best friend, Gordon has had a Wacom 9X12″ tablet for many years
Gord tried my Trust 6X8 and liked it.

Well, i’m off to surf around on your site some more!
sincerely,
Lance
Lance,
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment on my blog entry.
I think you highlighted one of my main problems – the Wacom tablet I’ve got is quite big (A4 sized.) and I have to move things around to use it. With a smaller one I could pick it up quickly. I shouldn’t be making excuses! LOL!
I’m going to persevere!
I’ll let you know how I go on.
Best wishes,
Richard
