Here are a few cartoons I did for an educational web site: Planet Science along with a testimonial from the editor!

Levers
So what’s the big deal about levers? Well, they are simple machines that help make your life easier. Have a look at this….

Archimedes (Greek mathematician, 287 to 212 B.C.) said, “Give me a place to stand and I will move the Earth,” meaning that if he had a lever long enough, he could move the Earth by his own effort.  At the very least we can show that a child can lift an adult:

Archimedes lifting the Earth!

You will need:
* An adult
* A child
* A brick or block of wood
* A plank of wood 1 inch thick and at least 4 feet long

What to do:
1. Make a lever by placing the plank over the wood block.
2. To take advantage of the properties of the lever, make sure the fulcrum (wood block) is closer to the end of the lever on which the adult will stand.
3. Have the adult stand on the short end and the child stand on the long end. What happens?
4. If the child cannot lift the adult, adjust the fulcrum so that it is closer to the side on which the adult is standing.

“We’ve used Richard a lot for various features on http://www.planet-science.com
His cartoons and illustrations are winners for us, I think because at
heart he’s a very talented artist and can draw anything well. He has a
great knack of being able to quickly absorb what it is you’re aiming at
and adding loads of wit, cuteness and clever ideas to your project,
whilst listening and using any feedback you have for him too. He has
always met (some pretty tight!) deadlines and is great at sticking to
your budget if you have a limit. Thanks Richard!”

Cartoon Mouse character!

Hi Richard.

Have just browsed through your site and really like your work. Very good indeed. Smashing. I have a project that has been ‘in the melting pot’ for some time due to not finding the right guy (gal) to illustrate a children’s book (yes, yet another one!) for me and my chum Roger (who lives on the Isle of Skye). I have my own small publishing set up, and will self-publish the first book of a series of six in all…..and have worked in book production, teaching, computer training. I can draw a bit (a handicap really) and have managed to originate characters for this book we have and have created lots of grungy black and white Photoshopped background images…… I’ve always seen the illustrations as being gritty, sooty, black and white, splodgy etc….but I am open to suggestions now as finding the right sort of illustrator has proved difficult…..so maybe a different tack might get the project rolling again. I’ll not ramble on too much for now…but maybe what I (we) need is a simpler approach…and cartoon style has been in the back of my mind. So, my question is what kind of rates do you work for? Are you too busy? Can we swap ideas back and forwards just so you get some idea of the work involved….I’ve found that some of the illustrators I’ve approached have been far too expensive, and quite inflexible……when really what Roger and myself are looking for is a chap who could work with us……be sympathetic (if you’ve got the ‘sym’ we’ve got the pathetic) Sorry to sound vague…but I’m sure you’ve heard this kind of pitch before. Apologies for the flippant email….its getting later in the day…but it’s a very nice project…..seriously. Best wishes………Steve T

Here’s what I came up with…

He's a mining mouse!

Unfortunately he wasn’t too impressed and I didn’t get the project. Don’t know if anyone else did!

You can’t win them all.

pigtalespizza Humorous greetings cards Pig Tales!

Pig Tales greeting card gag!

Here’s a cartoon I did years ago for a humorous cartoon calendar titled ‘Pig Tales’. It was a yearly job usually created in January/February for the following New Year. Each year I would submit 20 ideas for Jarrold’s Publishing to choose the 12 months from. So I must have about 100 ideas/artworks on file. I’m thinking of resurrecting them as a range of greetings cards. I think the ideas still hold up well.

What do you think?

My wife sent me an email from work with some’ bad advice’ about keeping fit and dieting.

Although I found this very funny – don’t do this at home!

Doctor 'Bad Advice' Knobb

Doctor’s Advice Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it… Don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
